Apartment construction takes lead in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS - The Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation has released housing starts data for the month of May and the City of Kamloops saw more apartment-style projects get underway than any other dwelling type.

“Housing starts in Kamloops continued their elevated pace in 2018 with the majority of the activity in apartment construction,” CMHC analyst Taylor Pardy says in a media release.

There were 1,058 housing units in total under construction in May. Of those, 648 were apartments, 224 were single-detached units, 114 were semi-detached units and 72 were row units.

The agency also reports there were 42 completed housing projects in May, with 25 of those being single-detached units, ten semi-detached units, six row units and one apartment building. During the same period last year only four housing projects were completed in all those categories.

In May, there were 100 housing starts including 62 apartment starts, 26 single units, and 12 semi-detached units.
