Another reason traffic cops set up traps along roadways

KELOWNA - With 50 violation tickets handed out for traffic violations last weekend, the Central Okanagan Traffic Services has a message for drivers.

Slow down and move over when emergency services are trying to do their job.

Central Okanagan and Kelowna Municipal Traffic Services set up an enforcement operation on Highway 97 near Old Vernon Road and caught people failing to slow down or move over for emergency or official vehicles roadside. The 50 violation tickets handed out carried a fine of $173 each, according to an RCMP media release.

“The overall goal isn't to write tickets,” Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Joe Duncan says in the release. “The whole idea is we want our officers, other emergency services personnel and our partners such as tow companies and city workers to be in a safer environment while doing their jobs."
