There have been 2,046 new COVID-19 cases reported in B.C. in the last 24 hours, a new record that eclipses yesterday’s total of 1,474.

The Interior Health region’s numbers only increased by 10 to 123 new cases, according to a news release from the Ministry of Health issued today, Dec. 23.

Once again, the Vancouver Coastal Health region leads the way with 880 new cases but Fraser Health is close behind at 741. There were 248 new cases on Vancouver Island and 53 in the Northern Health region.

The increase may not be all due to the new Omicron variant as there have only been 975 cases of Omicron in B.C. to date, up from 756 on Tuesday.

The number of Omicron cases in the Interior Health region more than doubled to 19 from eight on Tuesday.

Vancouver Coastal had 496 Omicron cases, Fraser Health had 221, there have been 235 cases on Vancouver Island and four in the North.

There was one more death, on Vancouver Island, bringing the provincial total to 2,410.

There are 8,739 active cases with 195 B.C. residents in hospital, of which 75 are in intensive care.

The vaccination rate for those aged 12 and over with at least one dose remained at 91.6% but those with two doses went up slightly to 89% and 18% of B.C. residents have received a third dose.

For the week of Dec. 15 to 21, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 24.8% of cases. For the two-week period of Dec. 8 to 21 they accounted for 68.6% of hospitalizations.
