A B.C. nurse has been suspended for 14 days for accessing confidential medical records she was not entitled to look at.

According to an Oct. 20 B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives decision, Port Coquitlam-based registered nurse Alanna Morse "repeatedly" accessed confidential patient information for non-work related purposes.

The nursing regulator said it took place between October 2020 and October 2021.

The nurse signed a consent agreement admitting to her behaviour and agreed to the suspension.

Morse adds her name to a list of nurses in the province who have been suspended for snooping on confidential medical records this year.

In March, Kelowna nurse Megan Angel was suspended for three weeks after she checked the medical records of a potential nanny she was considering hiring.

Three months later, Vernon nurse Michael Wood received a six-month suspension for looking at medical records he shouldn't have.

Shortly afterwards, Kelowna nurse Sondra Bader received an eight-day suspension for the unauthorized checking of someone's medical records.

In September, two nurses from the Lower Mainland were suspended for 60 days for collectively checking the records of more than 250 patients.

The victim in the Bader case told iNFOnews.ca she was stonewalled by Interior Health when she learned someone was checking her records and she took it upon herself to report it to the college because Interior Health hadn't done so.
