Calgary pharmacist used private health information to hit on patient:report

December 17, 2013 - 10:41 AM

EDMONTON - Alberta's privacy commissioner has sharp words for a pharmacist who used a patient's information to try to build a relationship with her on Facebook.

Commissioner Jill Clayton says the Calgary pharmacist misused health information for personal purposes when he called the woman twice in 2012 after she filled prescriptions with him, and when he sent a friend request to her on Facebook.

Clayton, in a news release, says — quote — “health information systems are for health care, not matchmaking.”

Clayton also rebuked the Amani Pharmacy for not training the pharmacist properly in how to treat personal information.

She has ordered the pharmacy to review its training and security systems.

The pharmacist was not named in the report but is no longer working at the pharmacy.
