VERNON - A former school teacher in the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District will stand trial on three child pornography charges next year.
William Murray Phelps Munton, 55, has been ordered to stand trial in Vernon Supreme Court starting Sept. 25, 2017.
Munton taught at Salmon Arm Secondary School but was terminated with cause in 2005, according to the school district.
He faces one count of possession of child pornography and two counts of making or publishing child pornography in connection with alleged offences in 2011 and 2015.
He also faces 19 counts of arson in connection with a rash of fires in 2014 in Vernon, including the Kin Race Track blaze.
The B.C. Teacher Regulation Regulation branch suspended Munton’s teaching certificate in August and is holding an inquiry into his conduct. His teaching certificate is still technically valid, although he is not permitted to teach.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
