An Alberta masonry company was recently handed a fine by Worksafe B.C. for failing to ensure its workers used fall protection on a job in Osoyoos.

Workers from Dag Masonry Ltd. were observed by Worksafe inspectors on the roof of a three-storey hotel under construction in Osoyoos while applying insulation and fibreglass tape to a parapet wall.

The worker wasn’t using a personal fall protection system and the parapet wall provided inadequate protection, exposing the worker to a fall risk of 6.5 metres, or 21 feet.

Worksafe B.C. reported inspectors also determined work on other areas of the roof where the fall risk exceeded 7.6 m, or 25 feet had also been carried out without a fall protection plan.

A stop-work order was issued on the site for this high-risk violation.

The firm also failed to ensure workers were instructed in the fall protection system for the work area, in addition to failing to have a written fall protection plan.

The firm was fined $2,500 for the infractions, which were repeat violations.
