VERNON - The historic downtown branch of the RBC is set to close its doors this September.

The Royal Bank of Canada located on the corner of 30th Ave and Highway 97 will officially shut its door September 13 after 114 years of service.

RBC regional vice president for the Okanagan and the Kootenays Pam Shaw told iNFOnews.ca the decision to close the branch was a "tough one." Shaw said the branch will be consolidated with the RBC branch at Polson Place and stressed there would be no layoffs with the closure.

"We are continuing to evolve our physical branch network because our service to our clients, their needs are changing, the way they bank is changing," Shaw said.

Shaw said RBC has three branches within five kilometres of each other in Vernon and the downtown branch has less foot traffic than the other two branches, which is why the downtown branch was chosen for closure. Shaw said 65 per cent of the downtown bank's clients already do their banking at either the Polson Place or Village Green Mall locations.

Shaw said the branch was the third to be consolidated in the Okanagan in the last few years.

RBC currently own the RBC branch building downtown and will put the building on the market, said Shaw.
