Advocacy Canada is pushing back against the City of West Kelowna’s decision to allow an American singer to come play a show.

Sean Feucht is a Christian nationalist singer who strongly supports President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement. He’s scheduled to perform at the Annette Neaudreau Amphitheatre in Memorial Park on Aug. 23.

Feucht has been touring across Canada and getting backlash everywhere he goes.

Advocacy Canada said his “Let Us Worship” tour is problematic since he has targeted the LGBTQ community, opposed gender-affirming care and speaks out against abortion, according to a press release.

“Public spaces belong to everyone,” Advocacy Canada president Wilbur Turner said in the release. “Permitting someone with such a harmful agenda to use a city park for what amounts to a platform for discrimination sends the wrong message — especially to queer youth who are already vulnerable.”

Several Canadian cities have cancelled his shows. A church in Montreal was fined by the city $2,500 for hosting Feucht’s event, but his show went on in Toronto. Feucht posted to social media about fighting the fine in court.

So far, West Kelowna has stood by its decision to allow Feucht to perform.

"While we understand that some rentals may draw more attention than others, the City must follow fair and equitable procedures and we cannot prohibit or cancel a booking because the views of the artist do not align with those of the City of West Kelowna or members within our community," a written statement from the city last week said.

Advocacy Canada said Feucht ought to be allowed to practice his religion and express his beliefs, but the city should ensure public spaces are safe for everyone.

“Sean Feucht has the right to his beliefs, but the city also has the responsibility to ensure its public spaces aren’t being used to promote ideologies that threaten the safety and dignity of marginalized groups," Turner said.
