A mother dog lead a B.C. SPCA officer to her litter of nine puppies on a property in the Fraser Valley, saving her life and the lives of her pups.

The SPCA got a call about a dog that appeared to be abandoned in the Agassiz area east of Chilliwack. When the officer arrived they were met by four-year-old pit bull cross Dallas who had recently given birth.

“She came right up to our officer and led her into the thick brush,” senior protection officer Eileen Drever said in a media release issued today, June 29.

Dallas took the officer about 100 feet into the brush right to the den she had made for her puppies. There the officer discovered nine, two-week-old puppies. The dogs were taken to the society’s shelter in Chilliwack.

“We would never have found these puppies if Dallas hadn’t led us there,” Drever said. “She is an amazing mom who knew her puppies needed help.”

It turns out the dog’s owner thought she had become the victim of predators after she disappeared.

“He recognized that he could not provide Dallas and her puppies with the care they required and chose to surrender them to the BC SPCA,” she said.

Mom was underweight and was put on a program to bring it back to normal. The puppies were healthy and are now in foster care.

Dallas and her pups will be up for adoption in six to seven weeks and once they are, more information will be posted to this web page.
