July 26 was a busy day for police officers in Nanaimo. There were 117 calls for service and local officers have a few tales to share.

At 10 a.m., officers met with a man who was talking irrationally and acting delusional after consuming LSD. Officers helped the man to an ambulance and he was taken to the hospital for treatment, according to a release from the cop shop.

Around 1 p.m. somebody reported a verbal domestic between a man and woman in downtown Nanaimo. Officers arrived and spoke with an adult man of no fixed address who said he was trying to clean the area up. “A female with him was located and officers had no concerns with her safety,” the release. “Both individuals were told to move along. After gathering up their affects, they did so.”

An hour later, there was a report of a person acting erratically and “making alarming statements.” Officers arrived to find the person brandishing a knife. The situation was de-escalated and the person was arrested under the Mental Health Act and taken to the hospital.

Then at 2:30 p.m., somebody reported a man being slumped over on a bench. Paramedics attended but the man refused medical aid. By the time officers arrived he had left the area and was unable to be found.

Around 4:30 p.m. somebody reported an erratic driver who was suspected of being impaired. Officers patrolled the area and located the vehicle. The driver was a woman in her 60s who admitted to doing cocaine earlier in the day. “Based on her admission and physical symptoms displayed, the woman was issued with 24 hour drivers license suspension and her vehicle was impounded.”

At 11 p.m. somebody called the cops to report two women who were running in and out of traffic. One of the women was located by officers and she was acting erratically, according to the release. “Officers formed the opinion that she was a risk to herself and also the public and arrested her for causing a disturbance. She was then lodged in cells for several hours until such time that she was deemed sober.”

There was another report at 11 p.m. of an “unruly intoxicated” person passed out in the middle of a road. “The attending officer was familiar with the individual and knew from previous dealings that he was too violent to be considered for the sobering facility. By default, the man was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place, then transported to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment, where he was kept until sober.”
