A&W has added yet another vegan option to their menu but there’s a catch.

Yesterday, Dec. 2, restaurants in B.C. and Ontario began selling plant-based nuggets, and the vegan option will only be available for a limited time.

The nuggets are made by Lightlife, a company that specializes in creating protein sources form plants. The nuggets contain no soy and are made of fava beans, peas and wheat flour.

The nuggets are cooked in vegetable oil but the company notes that the vegan nuggets are cooked in the same fryer as chicken. There are two vegan sauces to dunk the nuggets into, either the barbeque sauce or sweet and sour.

Although A&W hasn’t specified how long the nuggets will be available, on its website the company says it will gauge Canadian’s interest and bring back the nuggets if they are popular.

More exciting plant-based firsts coming out of @awcanada's headquarters in North Van this morning: they're launching plant-based NUGGETS!! They are SOOOO CRISPY and delicious!!!! On Monday, Dec. 2nd, this new limited time offer menu item will be available in B.C. and Ontario (sorry to the other provinces) and if things go well, I'm guessing they'll be rolled out to all locations nationally as a permanent menu item in 2020!! The nugget is made with pea protein and the dips are BBQ and sweet 'n sour (both fully plant-based, too). I'm continuously blown away by @awcanada's plant-based menu items and innovative spirit!!! More from today in stories ???? #sponsored

Exploring plant-based options isn't new to the burger chain. Last summer, A&W introduced their Beyond Meat burger, a vegan option that mimics the taste of meat. Stores across the country sold out after launching the product, and now the burgers are sold across Canada. The restaurant was the first national burger chain to offer Beyond meat, and now also offers Beyond Meat sausage.
