The Solomon Mountain fire is burning about four kilometres north of Beaverdell and triggered an evacuation alert for 44 properties last night.

The B.C. Wildfire Service reports that the fire is 17.5 hectares in size, was discovered yesterday, Aug. 18 and was caused by lightning.

“There was no significant growth overnight and more crews are actioning the fire,” Mark Stephens, emergency operations centre director for the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary told iNFOnews.ca today.

The evacuation alert remains in place and has not been upgraded to an order.

Stephens said the fire is on the mountain above the homes but he could not say how far it is away from the homes. Those are mostly on Solomon, Beacon and Boulder roads but some are also on Highway 33.

“We have issued these alerts out of an abundance of caution and to allow residents time to prepare,” Stephens said in a news release.

You can find the list of properties under the alert here.

The Beaverdell Fire Department and B.C. Wildfire ground crews were fighting the fire along with heavy equipment, air tankers and helicopters.
