Two wildfires are now under control while two likely human-caused ones continue to burn in the Interior.

The largest wildfire in the Interior, burning in the North Shuswap near Horseshoe Bay, is currently listed at 18 hectares in size and is classified as out of control. There are 20 B.C. Wildfire Service personnel on site today, May 1, the same as previous days, said fire information officer Shaelee Sterns. The fire grew since yesterday at the top of the fire as difficult terrain has posed a challenge for fire crews.

Another wildfire was spotted by Monte Lake area residents last night, April 30.

The wildfire is located at the 6-7 kilometre mark of the George Creek Forest Service Road, to the west of Monte Lake and is 0.3 ha in size. It is suspected to be human caused, according to the wildfire service’s fire map. It's currently being held and four wildfire personnel are on site, Sterns said.

Two other small fires were also discovered yesterday. One near Peachland at the Drought Creek and Highway 97C intersection is listed at 0.1 ha, was placed under control this morning. Another to the northeast of Savona, north of Highway 1, is 0.6 ha in size and still out of control.

Early season fires are often driven by dry conditions in dead surface areas and with lightening mean most of the fires the wildfire service is responding to are human caused, Sterns said.
