While COVID doesn’t get the headlines these days that it once did, it’s still with us and is still deadly.
Over the past three weeks, 34 people have died in the Interior Health region from COVID, according to data released by the B.C. Centre of Disease Control today, April 28.
There were 12 deaths in the week ending Saturday, April 23, in the region and 11 in each of the previous two weeks.
There have been 134 deaths in B.C. as a whole in that three-week span.

There were 355 COVID hospital admissions last week and 300 the week before. In the Interior Health region, there were 65 last week and 54 the week before.
These numbers are revised each week. For example, last week’s COVID update reported 238 hospital admissions in B.C. but it shows 300 this week.
The data release also shows case counts but those are limited to people who tested positive with PCR tests, not those who self-tested and did not report the results to health officials. That means the real number of cases may be four or five times higher.
The data release shows a gradual increase in cases in B.C. to 2,276 last week from 1,770 during the week of April 3 to 9.
In the Interior Health region, there were 598 cases recorded last week and 582 the week before.
The Interior Health region lags behinds the provincial average when it comes to vaccination rates, as it has throughout the pandemic.
As of today, 88% of B.C.residents of all ages have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine. In Interior Health that figure is 83%.
When it comes to two doses, the B.C. rate is 85%, while Interior Health is at 79%.
Only 52% of B.C. residents have received three doses of the vaccine. The rate in Interior Health is 48%.
