The first days of June are bringing summertime temperatures to Kamloops and the Okanagan.
Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says a high pressure ridge will dominate the B.C. Interior weather pattern until Friday, bringing summer-like conditions.
“What’s unusual about this week’s weather is this early in the year, we don’t normally see a high pressure ridge lasting this long.” Lundquist says.
Lundquist says we probably won’t see any record-breaking temperatures with this week’s warmth, as this time of year high pressure ridges often contain some leftover clouds.
“We’re not in full blown summer yet. It’s the wet part of summer and ridges usually have some clouds in them. It’s the nature of the atmosphere in late May and early June,” he says.
Lundquist says to expect at least one or two days of mostly sunny skies with temperatures in the 30s before things cool off for the weekend.
Highs are expected to range from the mid 20s to low 30s, at least until Friday in Kamloops and the Okanagan.
Today, May 31, Kamloops should see a high of 27 Celsius under a mix of sun and cloud.
Kelowna and Vernon should see a sun and cloud mix with a high of 26 C while Penticton experiences increasing cloudiness and a high of 27 C.
The clouds should burn off overnight, making for a mostly sunny day Tuesday.
Kamloops and Penticton should see highs of 31 C, with Vernon and Kelowna forecast highs at 29 C.
Wednesday looks pretty nice as well, with more sunshine and highs of 30 C in all four cities.
Clouds and a high of 29 C are forecast for Thursday.
There’s also no rain in the forecast until Friday evening, as a weather system is expected to arrive in time to cool things down to seasonal norms for next weekend.
Even with that, Lundquist says, temperatures will return to seasonal levels with the expectation of no more than a 60 per cent chance of showers in the weekend forecast.
Kamloops’s normal high and low for the beginning of June is 23 C and 10 C. Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton usually see highs of 21 C and lows of 8 C.
