The provincial government is spending $11.5 million to create more than 100 child care spaces at a North Okanagan elementary school.

The facility at J.W Inglis Elementary school in Lumby will provide before and after school care for children in kindergarten to age 12, and will also have programs for infants, toddlers and school-aged children, according to a media release from the Vernon school district.

The facility, which will be operated by the district in a partnership with the Whitevalley Community Resource Centre, will have 103 licensed childcare spaces.

“This funding will enable us to help meet the growing demand for child care services in Lumby and enhance early childhood education opportunities within our district,” school board chair Mark Olsen, said in the release.

The child care facility will be a new building connected to the existing school and construction should be finished by sometime in 2026.

“This investment aligns with our commitment to enhancing early learning experiences and providing nurturing environments where young children can thrive,” school district superintendent Dr. Christine Perkins said in the release.

The money for the new child care centre came from the BC New Spaces Fund which is jointly funded by the provincial and federal governments.
