Event Description

'Echoes of the Homesick Heart' is a timely and important verbatim theatre project that tells a multi-generational story exploring one family’s connection and disconnection between language, culture, and community. In order to rediscover what was lost, and to move forward in understanding, each generation must learn from the other with the help of wily trickster and teacher Sek?lép (coyote). Based on over 40 in-person interviews conducted directly by Laura Michel across the Secwépemc Nation, 'Echoes of the Homesick Heart' shares stories of this land by incorporating lived experiences and the real-life voices of various community members ranging from youth to elders.
The screening event will feature a special presentation of the filmed 2022 production and a panel discussion with an engaging group of theatre artists, musical artists, and language specialists, including:
Lori Marchand
Merewyn Comeau
Jeremy Kneeshaw
Janice E. Billy
There will also be a Lobby display from Shay Paul and the Indigenous Resurgence Project, and a sister event at the Kamloops Art Gallery on June 21.
