Event Description
Kelowna Arts Council is proud to partner with The Marmalade Cat Cafe to bring you Live Music every Friday! 5:00 pm til 7:00 pm. This week we are pleased to feature Kelowna singer songwriter Sean Bray and Gary Smyth. Gary Smyth is a guitarist who has honed a unique style that translates seamlessly into a number of genres. The variety comes from years playing rock’n’roll, then accidentally being coerced into playing country, eventually loving it; studying and playing jazz, playing folk, bluegrass and other musical hybrids. Onstage and in the studio. He has performed at the Doodle Bug Cafe in Alexis Creek, up in the Chilcotin. Also Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, and any variety of small town and big city rock clubs, biker bars, country bars that should have had chicken wire, festival stages, seniors’ homes, basements, churches, restaurants, places with thousands of people and places with literally none, weddings, a funeral, libraries, house concerts. Etc. Coast to coast in Canada and some great European dates. This of course leads to an eclectic blend of songs. They work together because he says they do. Come see how far off the beaten track they will go this time. Sean Bray is a well respected guitarist, composer and educator who has played with various artists on many diverse projects. While in New York Bray studied at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music then moved to Toronto becoming a sought after sideman, studio guitarist and leader of his own projects. Bray has played with and/or recorded with George Garzone, Pat LaBarbera, Bob Mintzer, Jon Faddis, Liberty Silver, Matt “Guitar” Murphy from the Blues Brothers, Mike Murley, Campbell Ryga, Kirk MacDonald, Cod Gone Wild, Ballet Kelowna and the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra as well as playing on commercials ranging from Toyota to Tim Hortons. Possessing the ability to fit into many musical genres, while still retaining an unmistakably original voice on his instrument, has made him an in demand session player in Canada. Bray now lives in Kelowna BC and plays with Cod Gone Wild, is the founder/music director/electric guitarist for Songs of the Southern Belles, plays with the americana band Dirt Road Opera and Stringers. Bray is endorsed by PRS Guitars, Planet Waves and D’Addario strings. CBC Radio also named Bray as one of Canada’s top 50 guitarists of all time. Please stop by – the kitchen will be open, you can order your beverages and your supper/snacks from the café’s great selection of tasty offerings, and settle in to enjoy the show! There is no greater gift to give performers than to simply sit and listen. We encourage a listening environment and thank everyone in advance for helping create a beautiful experience for all.
