September is right around the corner, and that means one thing to Nordic sport enthusiasts — Stüssi Sport's grand reopening event. Because they live and breathe all things Nordic, summer is the time of year when the Stüssi Sport team in Vernon, BC catches a breather, closing their brick-and-mortar store for the summer. Doors reopen on September 10th, and this year's reopening is an extra special one: Stüssi Sport is celebrating 50 years of operation in Vernon.

A Local Institution

Stüssi Sport is Vernon, BC’s premier destination for all things Nordic sport related. The mission statement for Stüssi Sport sums it up: their goal is to help you enjoy the sport they love. Because the Stüssi Sport team is so passionate about Nordic skiing, their reopening is always a big deal for local Nordic sport enthusiasts. Did you know they are celebrating their first year in their newly expanded location at 5000 Silver Star Rd Unit 404, along with 50 years in business.

Fabulous Deals and Free Give-Aways

So, what exactly is in store for the Stüssi Sport store reopening? Well, for starters, 10% to 70% off select equipment. Daily draws are also happening, with giveaways of gear, gift cards, and a chance to win free services — services like stone grinding of cross-country skis, something only a handful of locations in Canada can offer.

Stone Grinding: A Full Ski Resurfacing

"Stone grinding is a way to rebuild and reshape the surface of your ski," store manager Theresa Korobanik tells us. "It doesn't just polish or wax your ski's base; it completely resurfaces the base - formatted to the ski conditions or specific terrain type you prefer." Stone Grinding is the process of using a stone to “grind” a pattern into the base of a ski. Stüssi Sport does this with a very specialized machine, handled by staff who are top experts at cross country ski repair. Because they are a sole Nordic sport shop, their machine is specifically for cross-country skis, and the expertise that they bring comes from a long line of cross-country enthusiasts. Stone Grinding your skis is the best process to bring new life to loved but worn-out skis. “The final product is a ski that feels like a brand-new ski,” says Theresa.

The New Store is a Nordic Sport Candy Store

This year's reopening is happening at their new location, which means expanded parking, a massive showroom, and expanded inventory. "The store is really a Nordic sport candy store," Theresa laughs. "Skis, boots, clothing, you name it, it is in here." It is clear from my conversation with Theresa that the new store means more than just an expanded showroom, it means a better ability to serve the local community that she loves so much.

Stussi’s team members are deeply involved in the local Nordic community, especially the many local Nordic winter events held just up the road. "Sovereign Lake Nordic Club means a tremendous amount to Stüssi Sport,” Theresa says, referencing the vast Nordic sports club that - along with the Sovereign Lake trail network - connects with Silver Star Mountain Resort's extensive trails. "Stüssi Sport is a Gold member supporter of the Sovereign 2 Silver Star Ski Marathon, one of BC’s key Nordic events," she explains, outlining just how much the local community means to Stüssi Sport.

A Wealth of Knowledge in a Welcoming Space

If you are new to cross-country or have questions, Theresa and her team are an excellent resource. "We were all beginners once," she tells me, “and we know how intimidating starting out can be." Getting newcomers started in the right direction with the right gear is one of the most rewarding parts of her job, Theresa says.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts a 70% chance of a La Niña year, which is excellent news for Nordic enthusiasts - La Niña years typically mean big snowfalls. Stüssi Sport offers a great way to prepare for that anticipated snow - their Annual Nordic Ski Swap on October 6th. Bring in your current Nordic gear, and Stüssi Sport will help you sell or swap it. Young athletes from the Sovereign Lake Nordic Development Centre will be on hand to help out as well, and will be running some fundraising events to help offset the costs of their training and races.

Contact Theresa and her team for any questions about the Nordic Ski Swap or their upcoming grand reopening. Judging from what Theresa is telling us, you won't want to miss out on the deals during their opening week!

The Stüssi Sport website is a treasure trove of gear and information, or you can contact the Stüssi Sport team directly at 250-542-4141 or by email at stussisport@shaw.ca. The new Stüssi Sport location is just up the road from Butcher Boys Grocery Store in the Silver Star Gateway Park at Unit 404 - 5000 Silver Star Road in Vernon, BC.
