Many of the higher end units will adjust to the temperature of the room and output just the right amount of heat as the room dictates.

Depending on how well insulated a house is, a 40,000 BTU fireplace would be more than enough to heat a large living or family room. Most of the high-efficiency gas fireplaces have a large turn-down ratios; meaning they can adjust from the 40,000 BTU down to 12,000, or lower.
