For the Love of Cars

As a child riding in the family car down the Manitoba highways, Mike Brandt knew the make and model of every vehicle he saw in the rearview mirror. So, it’s no surprise he’s continued to find a way to be around cars ever since.

“I fell in love with cars from the beginning. I was really good with them. I started washing them, then went into sales, management, then having my own dealership,” said Brandt, who recently made the move from Manitoba to Kamloops, B.C. to open Kamloops Wholesale Auto (KWA) with his partner Rachel.

Since they’ve opened their 8th Street location November 17, cars have been rolling off the lot – about 40 a month.

“We’ve changed the market here. We make only hundreds on a car, but save buyers thousands. We’ve even sold cars at cost just to help someone out,” said Brandt with pride.

The reason being is they stand behind their cars and trucks and provide a full safety check as well as frame and transmission check. All mechanical checks and work are done by Kamloops’ Integra Tire, with Diamond Shine taking care of the detailing. “We stand behind every vehicle.”

All vehicles at KWA are priced at $10,000 to $15,000 and under with every type of make and model from Audi sports cars to Dodge minivans. At any one time, there are about 60 cars on the lot. “We’ve figured out the market and what people want, so we give it to them,” said Rachel.

Customer service is a strong part of what makes KWA so successful. Other dealers have been known to send customers to the dealership.

“We even deliver vehicles to people’s door. We’ve gone to Kelowna and even to Calgary,” said Rachel. “We make people feel they are not just a customer, but that they are buying from a friend. It’s very relaxed here and we give people a chance to look. There is absolutely no pressure.”

Brandt recalled a story that depicted just how satisfied people are with KWA’s selection, price and customer service. There was a time a customer was driving by KWA test driving a vehicle from a different dealer, while Brandt was moving one of his cars. The client followed Brandt and immediately bought the car he was moving.

Despite the process and paperwork involved with setting up a vehicle business in B.C., Brandt is pleased with the move and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
