Here you'll find reader responses to stories, letters to the editor and newsletter editorials, or letters to the editor for the week. They may have been edited slightly for readability.

RE: Friday, July 30 newsletter editorial about wildfire season

I would like to know if the truck pulling the trailer with a Bobcat had trailer brakes. To me a logical conclusion of a fire on a truck going down a steep hill would be over heated brakes. Again, I wonder what is the law outlining when trailer brakes need to be installed on a trailer.

RE: Wednesday, July 30 newsletter editorial about Cancel Culture

There are definitions to almost every role in society including that of journalists and editors, someone who is in the field gets the choice of choosing how to carry out such a role to an extent? Scandal magazines aside, I think reporters are there to report what happens, whatever they personally think of it, newspapers should report what is newsworthy without going to either extreme of reporting mostly bad news or mostly good news.
The fellow you mention has views offensive to at least some yet he is an "entertainer" and many of them have offensive viewpoints whether different from or similar to Trump. Those who are opposing his appearances may be close to the line of committing infractions, if they don't carefully think through their actions, after all protests sometimes lead to violence between opposing viewpoints.
I can only encourage you to follow your conscience on this mat
ter.

Just my two-bits but who cares what he stands for if you don’t like him or his music don’t go but trying to cancel someone because they don’t agree with your way of thinking is part of the reason why our world is in the horrible state its in.
Everyone has different views there is no one right or perfect way of thinking lets celebrate our diversity and grow from it, thats free speech and free speech has been responsible for most if not all of our gains as a society.
Without free speech we would still have or be slaves and no women voters among a lot of other oppressive parts of our history.
Come on people you be you and I be me, if you want change talk about it don’t try to stop others from talking about the change they want.
I say stop being so soft, let's offend each other and find common ground that we all can grow from and make a stronger society.
Just because you’re offended does not mean you are right the same goes for me there is no one way for everybody.
Anyways just my two-bits thanks for letting me share.

Kelowna man who broke his promise forced to sell property at huge loss

Did the seller use a realtor or did he negotiate the contract himself? If so, an expensive lesson learned.

Kelowna bank robber awarded $10,000 by Human Rights Tribunal

This decision seems bizarre. They were going to fire him. He clearly was a disaster at the job. They used the wrong words and he gets a $10k payday because of it?

— William Mastop, via iNFOnews.ca

This judgment should be appealed!

— Colin Pritchard, via iNFOnews.ca

I’ve been involved in more human rights complaints than I like to count. They lost as soon as they mentioned his record. It isn’t fair, but it is just. If they got to fire him for discriminatory reasons, it means other companies could fire people for discriminatory reasons. Our society can’t allow that, or we’re back to the days when people of colour, gays, immigrants and others work in daily fear they might be fired for no more reason than who they are.
Human resources people need to be properly trained in human rights and the dos and don’ts of letting a person go. The last thing you want is any mention at all of any protected right. If they’d let him go out the door without that last word, they’d have been fine.
It isn’t about him, or the company. It is about our society and our refusal to tolerate discrimination. I hear a lot of complaints about the Human Rights Tribunal in all the provinces, mostly by people who say ‘it wasn’t that bad’, who want to let this instance slide, not realizing that that is the beginning of a very slippery slope.
A postscript about the singer dude. Ask in a month if anyone remembers his name. This blows up quickly, but also dies down quickly. People need to be more aware of who they are inviting through the door. Personally, I would have let him play, then charged him, if appropriate with hate speech. A crime they don’t have in the U.S.

RCMP respond to young person's death at downtown Kamloops park

Is it really that flipping hard to use taxpayers money for a net there? Something a mother who’s lost her son has petitioned for years (amongst other loved ones of others as well). This city sure knows how to throw money right into the stupid category and no where near the category of helping, encouraging and simply making our community (especially those of our youth who are the future) take their own lives. My condolences go out to the family and friends. It's doesn't matter if he jumped or not. Precautions have been talked about, are do-able, and they make the most humane sense. Plus, I believe they'll cost less and be more attractive than ANY "statue/piece of art" you could place anyways. Get a grip Kamloops. — Megz Alexandra, via iNFOnews.ca

RE: Friday, July 25 newsletter editorial about kids on the road with e-bikes

Great questions, Marshall.
When new technological devices are introduced to the world, it makes sense they will come with unforeseen problems requiring resolution.
When the web first fired up, all kinds of issues surfaced, some potentially deadly, like dating site predators, big money scams, child-luring, etc.
eBikes are great for health, function, and combating global warming. Like you, I think the Western world needs to incorporate new infrastructure to accommodate alternative forms of transportation.
Introducing training & licensing, as well as age &/or other restrictions, and educating the general public about eBike safety (which differs from manual bikes) may be the way to go, and I'm sure there are many other great ideas out there as well.

'Intimidated and scared:' Shuswap realtor harassed by senior

He looks just as I'd imagine someone who would engage in this alleged behaviour would look. The only difference is that his selfie wasn't taken inside of his truck, and those don't appear to be Oakley shades.

That's creepy as can be. There are clearly some issues in Mr. Mulvagh's head. I hope he can move on.

iN DISCUSSION: Rats. So many rats

We refer to other humans as rats, as in "You dirty rat".

However a rat is only a vermin in our eyes, not theirs, maybe a predator or a prey to other animals. If you believe in a Creator, what do you suspect that Creator would say to you about your view of rats? The creator might say "get over yourselves, you filthy humans", you've created the very conditions you are complaining about.

— Patrick Longworth, Penticton, via iNFOnews.ca

Wow! I had no idea about the BC Interior's huge rat problem, which definitely needs to be resolved. Rats are dangerous to humans and other animals in many ways.
After reading the article & the large number of email responses, I had a thought that maybe residents who bring cage-caught rats to animal control, dead or alive, the city could pay a "bounty" of sorts for every rat they bring in. Animal Control could then deal with their disposal.
I think a small reward with catch & transport guidelines would encourage people to hunt these critters down while decreasing their populations. I don't know if this could work but additional brainstorming might...  just an idea.

iN VIDEO: Williams Lake drunk driver injured in low speed crash caught on camera

I remember as a kid when there was a big push to get people to wear their seatbelts. That big round shatter area on the windshield in front of the driver's seat was a very common feature in accidents. Walking around outside the ICBC crashed car lot you could see lots of them.
