THOMPSON: Trump is the antithesis of what America should be

October 21, 2019 - 12:00 PM

OPINION

Last month, President Donald Trump posted more than 800 tweets…about 28 a day. October will likely see even more. Most of his tweets are inappropriate tirades…petty personal attacks…and invariably they are chock full of lies. His threats - were he not the president - would likely get you a restraining order against him.

Trump’s Ukrainian scandal has driven most of his recent tweets…and as the truth closes in on Trump…you can see and feel his desperation.

This is a man who has on more than one occasion referred to himself as a “stable genius.”

Personally, I think he’s nuts. And those who follow him - almost like those who follow a cult leader - and defend his indefensible behaviour…might be nuts, as well.

But like mental illness…which covers a wide range of maladies…Trump’s version of nuts is different from that of his supporters. You see, Trump doesn’t give a rat’s patoot about America’s future…he cares about his future. Most of the Trump followers - as blind as they are - believe in America…they just have been tricked into a more exclusive view of what America should be. But eventually, staunch Trump followers will be ridiculed with the harshest rebuke possible…being Un-American.

As for Trump, he has made too many ridiculous, unhinged and nasty comments to list. Those nuts who defend him simply say, “That’s just Trump being Trump.” Hmmmm? If you told your toddler to behave…and he told you to “Go **** yourself!”…would you just say, “Oh, that’s just Bobby being Bobby?” Yeah, well, that’s how stupid that defence of Trump is.

One of Trump’s favourite lies in the past month accuses Democrats of being focused only on impeachment. They are “Do Nothing Democrats” he has said dozens of times. Trouble is, House Democrats have passed all kinds of legislation, from laws aimed at curbing corruption in politics and doing something about climate change to background checks for gun buyers and the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women act.

Also, House Democrats have passed measures to extend non-discrimination rules to the LGBTQ community, increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour, lower prescription drug prices, protect consumers from predatory financial services and provide insurance for those with a preexisting condition.

Of course, none of these have been brought up by Mitch McConnell in the Senate for fear his Republican members would have to publicly take a pass on the above popular bills. So, “Do Nothing Democrats”…just another lie.

I keep asking the same question…and I never get a response from Trump lovers: How can you claim the moral high ground and then, not only support but actually defend a man who is so morally and politically corrupt?

People like Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Senate Majority Lead Mitch McConnell and Sen. Lindsey Graham are among those Republicans interested in one thing…staying in power. Their various defences over the past few weeks…laughable. Their hypocrisy…obvious. If John McCain were here…he’d slap Lindsey Graham until the latter no longer had that cornpone Southern accent.

It is true what has long been said in the nation’s capital…”Democrats fall in love…Republicans fall in line.” President Trump will be impeached…as he should be. However, he probably will not be convicted in the Senate…because - sadly for America - Republicans simply won’t do the right thing. They will stand abreast…refuse to admit truths regardless of evidence…and fall in line. Winning is - after all - the only thing that counts if you’re a Trump Republican.

Trump has made truth obsolete in just three years. Corruption rules today in the Senate and the White House. So, what must happen is an overwhelming rejection at the ballot box a little more than a year from now. There will be a lot more scandalous behaviour that becomes known in the coming months…truly…“that is Trump just being Trump.”

Republicans could lose control of the Senate in 2020. I certainly wouldn’t want to be a Republican running for re-election…knowing that Trump - the loosest cannon on America’s ship of state - has more than a year to do enumerable stupid, unethical and illegal things. How many times can a Republican Senator look stupid in front of television cameras? We’ll find out.

There’s one group of voters that just might have learned a valuable lesson…five percent of those who voted for Trump in 2016 voted for President Obama in 2012. Polls and interviews by various news media show these people will vote for any Democrat over Trump in 2020. That alone will be enough to throw Trump out and subject him to legal battles as a citizen that will tie him and his money up for a long time…and he’ll be 74 next election.

Trump will have killed the Republican Party after the 2020 election…and those who vote Republican will have just stood by and watched. Actually, they were accomplices…giving Trump a loaded gun…with not so much as a caution to be careful. How could you expect a different outcome?

I - along with the vast majority of Americans - will be glad to see Trump go…not because he’s an obnoxious and incompetent man unfit for the office of president…or because he’s the flag-bearer of what has become a pathetic Republican Party.

We’ll be glad because Trump simply is the antithesis of what American should be. Some 67 percent of Americans know and accept that already…and nearly 33 percent are grieving…spread along a continuum of denial and isolation, anger, bargaining and depression. Hold on…acceptance in just over a year away.
