THOMPSON: Rudy Giuliani is not funny, he's scary

November 23, 2020 - 12:00 PM

OPINION

Last Thursday, with streams of mascara-stained sweat rolling down his cheeks, Rudy Giuliani led an hour and forty-five minute clown show that - far from funny - scared anyone who loves Democracy.

As ridiculous as Giuliani appeared - complete with perhaps the worst-ever impression of Joe Pesci’s character...lawyer Vincent Gambini in “My Cousin Vinny” - he was but one player in a performance from the Theatre of the Absurd masquerading as a press conference at Republican National Committee headquarters.

Giuliani claimed that he and his fellow Bozos had evidence of mass, coordinated voter fraud across several states that stole the election from Donald Trump. Despite such convincing evidence, however, at no time during or after the presser did he or anyone else offer even a shred of that evidence.

“I know crimes, I can smell them,” Giuliani proclaimed. “You don’t have to smell this one, I can prove it to you, 18 different ways. I can prove to you that he won, Pennsylvania, by 300,000 votes. I can prove to you that he won Michigan, probably 50,000 votes.”

And yet, he didn’t prove it 18 different ways...not even one.

Rudy the Clown it turns out suffers from the same ailment as Trump, he simply can’t tell the truth. He said in rapid succession...that more than 600,000 ballots in Pennsylvania weren’t inspected, rendering them “null and void,”...a lie; that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito said ballots in Pennsylvania coming in after 8 p.m. couldn’t be opened...a lie; and that votes weren’t certified in Wayne County, Michigan...a lie.

But Rudy took a back seat in the clown car when former Michael Flynn lawyer Sidney Powell strode to the mic. She wove conspiracy theories in a patchwork that might only be described as a “crazy quilt”...somehow linking in one rant George Soros, China, ANTIFA, Cuba, former Chicago mayor Richard Daley, several U.S. cities, a web server from Germany, Big Tech, two presidents of Venezuela (one living and one dead) and the Clinton Foundation in rigging the election.

In the real world of laws and courts...the Trump Clown Troupe has either lost cases or they have been dismissed 32 of 33 times...poll observers in Pennsylvania were allowed to move from ten feet to within six feet of those counting ballots two weeks ago.

Failed lawsuits notwithstanding, the rest of this nonsense is simply amateurish PR stunts from a desperate White House. Trump and his allies are doing whatever they can to cast doubt on President-Elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s decisive victory.

Here, too, the strategy is clown-like. From the very start, Trump and his minions have cast dispersions on cities with large Black populations... Detroit, Philadelphia, Milwaukee and Atlanta...dog whistling to racist supporters a “You know how they are” theme. Trump is the king of divisiveness...the prince of darkness...absolute evil.

The majority of Americans chose Biden in an election that was safe and secure...there was no widespread fraud...in Michigan Biden won by more than 157,000 votes! And yet, most Republicans rather than speaking out still sit idly as Trump and his clowns undermine Democracy.

Trump - unable to win in courts that he and Republican legislators have stacked with too many unqualified judges for four years - took the unheard of step of summoning Michigan lawmakers to the White House last Friday...so he could influence them? The two state lawmakers who have to certify the vote in Michigan today and five other state-level Republicans met with Trump for two hours. When the delegation left, they said they learned nothing “that would change the outcome of the election in Michigan.”

Trump’s claims that the Georgia vote count robbed him of a win disappeared on Friday, as well. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger - a Republican - bluntly declared, “I live by the motto that numbers don’t lie,” and made official the final tally that the original vote and re-count showed Biden defeated Trump by 12,670 votes. Gov. Brian Kemp, also a Republican, tersely added he would sign the certification.

Of course, Trump continues his paper-tiger fight - not to assuage his own or his supporters’ disappointment in losing - but simply to hustle money from stupid donors. Some 75 percent of the donations he cons Republicans with in daily emails goes - not to fight real legal battles - but directly to Trump. And anyone with a brain knows that means paying for his lavish lifestyle...a con man to the very end.

On Jan. 20, 2021 at high noon...Joseph R. Biden Jr...his hand on his family Bible will say this: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Unlike Donald Trump - who violated this oath - Joe Biden will live up to it.

There are 59 days before Biden’s inauguration...and who knows what bat-shit craziness Trump and the Giuliani Clown Troupe might try. I could do no less that I have in fighting the perversity of the Trump presidency for the past four years...but I look forward to not writing about Trump in 2021.

Still, as a writer, it is not I but bard William Shakespeare who somehow saw the future when he wrote in “Macbeth” the truth of the Trump presidency, “It is a tale...told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
