OPINION
Most Americans have not met - and never will meet - either Donald Trump or Joe Biden. I have met both. I’ve had personal conversations with each of them. There’s something about being in the same room...looking a person in the eye...that reveals much about someone. You gain insights...a feel for that person that is not otherwise possible.
My disdain for Donald Trump is, of course, widely known. He has shown the world exactly who he is...and what he is...for decades. Except for the most ignorant among us, everyone knows he has more defects than a 1958 Ford Edsel. So, the rest of this column is about the much better man...Joe Biden.
Joe Biden will be the next president of the United States...and none too soon. Last month I wrote a column that was - at best - cautiously optimistic about whether Biden would win.
But Americans - even Republicans - are weary. More nonsense than anyone - even a writer with a fertile imagination - could conjure has come to pass in the past few weeks. The vast majority of people realize that the current president poses a threat to American democracy. Nearly 10 million Americans have already cast their ballots in early voting. Indeed, more Americans will vote in this election than any previous one...by millions. It will be a landslide for Biden...even with Republican and Russian cheating.
You see, Joe Biden promised he will be president for all Americans...not just those who vote for him. The one thing I know...backed by 47 years of his public service...is that Biden doesn’t lie. He has integrity. He actually can admit to a mistake...and he can apologize. I know its been nearly four years...but in case you forgot...that’s called character.
What else do I know first-hand about Joe Biden? His record over nearly a half-century proves his respect for the rule of law. He will restore respect and faith in institutions that have suffered...because he knows his actions speak even louder than his words.
Science will no longer be the source of conspiracies...but will once again guide Americans in matters that matter. Those in his administration - his Cabinet - will be highly competent...experts with experience...not people who simply gave his campaign money.
America’s allies will once again be allies...and he will stand up to dictators and adversaries rather than praise them...and follow their directions. The injustices of the Justice Department...like corrupt Attorney General William Barr...will disappear.
White supremacists and domestic terrorists will be sought and prosecuted...not given support and comfort. Rather than divide...Joe Biden will heal a nation that has suffered from a president whose strengths - an ability to hate and a willingness to seek revenge - are weaknesses.
If Joe Biden had done nothing else in his career, his sponsorship of the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 as a Senator, and overseeing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 as Obama’s Vice President make him a public servant “Hall of Farmer.”
Is Joe Biden always right? Certainly not. He is human...but we will never be misled or held captive in darkness by this man. He is capable of evolving...changing his point of view. In 1996, Joe Biden favoured the Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibited federal recognition of same-sex marriages. But in 2012 during a “Meet the Press” interview, he supported gay marriage - blindsiding the Obama White House - but moving America that much closer to equality for all.
JoeBiden.Com gives voters what they need to know about Joe Biden and what his presidency will look like. If Americans look at where they’ve been the past nearly four years...and where they are today...and consider where the could be under Joe Biden...the evidence of a landslide is clear.
Americans aren’t simply choosing a president this year...they are choosing a path forward. Where America will be after Nov. 3 will determine the health and welfare of - not just 331,000,000 Americans - but of people worldwide.
The intent of those who signed the Constitution of the United States was “to form a more perfect union”...and God knows America has taken a zig-zag path the past 244 years. America has a long way to go, but Joe Biden is a huge step in the right direction.
