GEORGE: When the flu becomes a family activity over the holidays

December 26, 2017 - 12:08 PM

OPINION

Thirteen years ago at Christmas, I proposed to my wife. We had gone to my parent's house in Clearwater, bringing the kids from both our previous relationships and unbeknownst to us, the Norwalk virus.

The first indication that all was not well came just past midnight on Christmas eve when my youngest daughter at the time threw up all over her cousin, the blankets, the bed, and the carpet on the floor. No one got much sleep that night and Christmas day was a bit of a bust.

I managed to get the proposal out of the way that morning (she said yes) before throwing up into some empty boxes.

This year, Christmas was not as memorable as that, but it wasn't for lack of trying. A nasty flu had been moving through our community in the week leading up to the big day and people had been coughing, sniffling, and aching their way through their preparations. (PSA: In future, if you are sick, please stay home.)

On Friday, my daughter, myself, and my wife all came down with it. And here I am on Monday night, still shivering and suffering through the sweats and aches that come with it. We didn't go for the traditional family feast, we barely moved from the couch all day long.

But we did get a bit into the spirit of the day. We drank tea, ate toast, and shared our misery with each other. I guess Christmas is what you make of it.

Merry Christmas to all and peace on earth to men of good will.

See you next week.
