MANN: November is a great month, really it is

OPINION

November can be an underrated month.

Generally, when I ask someone what their favourite month is, November is rarely the answer — unless they have a birthday in November.

Why?

The seasons are changing fast come November, and if it hasn’t already, it usually snows. As I’ve mentioned before, snow creates considerable obstacles for some people (thus their relevant hate or dislike of November).

Many suffering from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) have told me they find November to be the peak of trouble for them, as the summer sun begins its long hiatus and that misty fog blowing into many areas of the Interior starts to stick around.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. November can be a wonderful time of year for anyone.

I have composed a list of five reasons why November is a great month (and just as important as the other 11).

1. The weather: If November had a Facebook profile, its relationship status would be “It’s Complicated.” You never know what you are going to get from one day to the next (unless you follow the weather report and then you probably do). It’s kind of exciting. I wake up each morning not sure if I should pull out my winter jacket or raid my husband’s T-shirts.

2. Indoor activities: You don’t need an excuse to retreat indoors when November comes around. Gone are the days of staying outside from dusk to dawn. Remember that card game you’ve been meaning to learn or that new recipe you wanted to try but it requires four hours of oven time overheating your house? Have atter!

3. Sales: Coincidentally, when everyone starts to move indoors from the colder weather, malls and stores only seem to get busier and busier…not so great if you hate crowds. But, the sales start to pop up everywhere. Whether it is a tempting pre-Christmas purchase or a welcome to winter bathing suit blowout, you can usually find some pretty good deals on things you need (or don’t need).

4. Hot drinks: Someone once said, “There’s is nothing that a good cup of tea can’t fix.” I have no idea who it was, but I for one am a fan of hot drinks. And November is the perfect time to just sit for a moment with a cup of something hot and give yourself a chance to regenerate and let the ‘To Do’ list wait for just another minute.

5. Anticipation: I know it sounds crazy but November gives you the chance to be excited. Part of the excitement of anything, is the fact that there is some build up. November is a great time to start planning and dreaming about things to come — winter, Christmas, New Years — even plans for the coming year. Curled up inside your house with a warm blanket and that cup of something warm, you can just dream about what may or may not be yet to come. It’s a guilty-free pleasure.

So if you are feeling like November couldn’t possibly go any slower, or you are feeling a bit blue over the grey skies and the disappearance of summer, just remember November has its perks too. Maybe the next time someone asks you what your favourite month is, you will give November a chance.
