A car-sharing company with operations in Kelowna, Kamloops and the Lower Mainland will stop operations on May 1.

The Boston-based company says in an email notice to its customers the "complexities" of operating in the province, including local insurance regulations, are behind its decision.

Zipcar had cars operating at both Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops and UBC Okanagan in Kelowna.

In the notice, Zipcar says customers can still use their memberships in other locations and it will continue operating in cities across North America.

Zipcar, which is owned by car rental company Avis Budget Group Inc., came to B.C. in 2007. It didn't start doing business in Kamloops and Kelowna until 2017.

The company could not immediately be reached for comment.
