WESTWOLD - A mother in the Southern Interior is expressing her thanks after an RCMP officer turned a mistaken 911 call into a learning experience for a young boy.
According to a thank you letter posted on the RCMP website, Sophie Maher's seven-year-old son was playing with the phone and called the emergency line on July 6. Police let the family know they'd be coming to check on them, and Maher had a talk wth her son about when it's appropriate to call 911.
She says her son was horrified and thought he was going to be arrested, no matter what Maher said to reassure him. Const. Bixby and a corporal attended to their home in Westwold, and Maher explained what happened and her son apologized. Instead of ending it there, the officers on scene went above and beyond.
Maher says in her letter that the officers were "absolutely lovely" and kind to her son, told him about 911 and then proceeded to show the family the inside of the police truck they came in.
"They turned on the sirens, showed us the lights, where the "bad guys" sit, and patiently answered my kid's questions about what he kept in all his pockets and pouches," Maher says. "My son was a happy man, as were all the other kids, and my oldest has now announced he wants to join the RCMP when he's older."
Maher says she was really amazed at how the officers dealt with the situation.
