YMCA of Okanagan Opens Doors to Residents of Wood Buffalo

KELOWNA - The YMCA of Okanagan has opened the doors of its centres to any Wood Buffalo resident displaced by the fires in northern Alberta.

Any displaced Wood Buffalo resident who requires showers, drop-in programs, play care for their children, or swim time with the family, may use YMCA of Okanagan facilities — the Kelowna Family YMCA in Rutland or H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre in the Mission — at no charge until they are able to return home.

“The YMCA is a centre of community,” Sharon Peterson, CEO of the YMCA of Okanagan, says.” Many local families have welcomed those who were forced to evacuate their homes due to the fires. We would like to open our doors as well and invite those who have been displaced to come to the YMCA where they can access our facilities and programs at no charge.”

To thank Okanagan residents for their generosity, any individual or family who is hosting a displaced Wood Buffalo resident may also access the Kelowna Family YMCA or H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre free of charge when accompanied by the displaced individual or family.

Please contact the YMCA of Okanagan at 250-491-9622 for details.
