YMCA Healthy Kids Day this Sunday

We know that raising healthy kids is every parent’s goal. At the YMCA we believe that helping young people grow up healthy makes our whole community stronger.

One of the ways we help promote an active healthy lifestyle is through our annual YMCA Healthy Kids Day. On Sunday June 2, 2013, from 12 to 4 p.m. the YMCA of Okanagan is encouraging kids and families to take part in this free community event where the whole family can be active and have fun together. Designed to help kids and families embrace healthy habits, YMCA Healthy Kids Day is an annual event where YMCAs come together to celebrate and promote families being more active together.

The event is FREE for everyone in the community and takes place both inside and outside the Kelowna Family YMCA, 375 Hartman Road.

Kids and families can participate in over 35 heart pumping activity stations (such as aquatics races, giant inflatable’s and games, sports challenges, dance and martial arts, and so much more!), enjoy a FREE healthy BBQ and the Healthy Kids Entertainment Stage that gets everyone moving with fun and fitness.  A Healthy Passport can be picked up that encourages kids and families to participate in as many of the stations as possible to be eligible to win outstanding prizes!

Starting healthy habits early in life sets the stage for future physical, social, emotional and mental development and impacts overall health. This event is a great opportunity for families to spend time together, learn to love active living and have fun.

“Canadian Kids received an ‘F’ on the Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card with only 46% getting 3 hours or less of active play per week, including weekends,” says Kelly Howard, YMCA Healthy Kids Day Event Coordinator. “Fortunately, there’s a lot of caring children and family serving organizations in our community to show everyone that making healthy choices can be fun, easy and achievable!”

YMCA Healthy Kids Day is generously sponsored by many companies and organizations dedicated to improving the health and wellness of kids and families from the Okanagan, including title sponsor Interior Savings, the Capital Newspaper, and Sun FM.

YMCAs offer safe, convenient community gathering locations for children, teens and their families
in multi-purpose facilities that are designed to reduce barriers to active play. The YMCA’s financial assistance programs ensure that everyone is able to participate, regardless of their financial circumstance. Please visit ymcaokanagan.ca for more information.

Across Canada, most children do not meet recommended levels of daily physical activity which has resulted in almost 1 in 3 Canadian children being overweight or obese. Only 5% of five to seventeen year olds meet the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines (ie over 60 minutes of moderate-to vigorous intensity physical activity daily).

The YMCA works with families, schools and other community partners to promote healthy choices and make healthy active lifestyles (play, relationships, health) accessible to all Canadian children year-round. The YMCA of Okanagan provides opportunities for children and teens to engage in active play through a variety of age-appropriate programs offered at the Kelowna Family Y, H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre, Y Out of School Care, Employment Centres and Silver Lake Camp.
