KELOWNA - YMCA of Okanagan smashed its event fundraising record on Saturday, raising $75,000 at its 9th Annual Cycle for Strong Kids event. In 2014, the event raised $63,000.

Held at the H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre, nearly 300 participants raised funds and took part in unintimidating hourly stationary cycle classes with music, prizes, snacks and more. Many individuals and teams dressed up in costumes to make the event even more fun.

“Funds raised at Cycle for Strong Kids will impact hundreds of children and families in the Okanagan,” said Rhonda Zakala, GM of Marketing and Fund Development for the YMCA of Okanagan. “Thanks to the generous support of those who donated and came out to cycle, children and families who need it most will be able to access affordable Y programs including preschool and before and after school care.”

One in five children enrolled in Y programs — including membership, swim lessons, preschool, before and after school care and more — require financial assistance in order to participate. At the YMCA, no one is turned away because of an inability to pay.

Cycle for Strong Kids has also grown into a great team building and social event.

“We had a blast on Saturday,” said Arthur Monahan, Rutland RBC Branch Manager. “RBC had 25 employees, family and friends participate. For us, this event gets bigger and better every year. We can’t wait to come back next year and support Cycle for Strong Kids.”

While the event was a great success, the need remains to assist more children and families in the Okanagan. Individuals can still donate to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign by visiting www.ymcaokanagan.ca/donate.

Cycle for Strong Kids is sponsored by Fresh Air and Delcourt Wealth Management at ScotiaMcLeod.
