Saskatchewan men try to buy medals of province's hockey and war hero

REGINA - The war medals of one of Saskatchewan's most decorated First World War heroes are being sold and two men are trying to get them back to Regina.

Dave Thomson and Major Keith Inches of the Saskatchewan Military Museum say they're trying to raise $15,000 to repatriate the medals of Edward (Hick) Abbott.

Abbott was awarded a British war medal and a Military Cross and Bar before he was killed in action.

Inches says it's not just the military record that makes Abbott important.

It is his name on the Abbott Cup, which was awarded each year between 1919 and 1999 to the winning Junior A hockey team in western Canada.

Abbott captained the Regina Victorias when the team won the Junior Championship of Canada in 1913 and 1914, and the Saskatchewan Saskatchewan Amateur Hockey Association named the trophy in his honour.

Inches says he doesn't know of anyone else in Saskatchewan who had a sports trophy in play for that long a period of time.
