VERNON - One person has died after a three-vehicle collision closed Highway 97 for several hours yesterday evening.

The fatal crash took place yesterday, Jan. 6, at about 3 p.m. on Highway 97 near Birnie Road south of Vernon.

Three vehicles and seven people were involved in the collision, according to an RCMP media release. When officers, along with paramedics and firefighters arrived on scene good Samaritans were already administering first aid to those injured.

RCMP say a woman died from her injuries and the six victims were transported to hospital. No word from police on their current conditions.

RCMP have not identified the woman who was killed.

Police say a driver lost control while attempting to pass two other vehicles, sending one of them into a rock face, killing the passenger inside. Driver inexperience is being considered as a possible contributing factor.

“The investigation into this tragic incident is still on-going, however it is alleged by witnesses that one vehicle was driving dangerously just before the incident occurred,” Vernon RCMP spokesperson Const. Kelly Brett says in the release. “The road was closed for hours in order for the RCMP collision analyst to attend and examine the scene.”
