The road portion of the 2016 Canada West season for the youthful Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s soccer team is over.

The ‘Pack played outdoors in chilly Edmonton and fell to the University of Alberta Pandas 6-0 on Sunday (Oct 16).

SYNOPSIS:

Cold weather in Northern Alberta and BC resulted in the WolfPack playing only one match on their final road trip of the season.  After scoring an own goal, the WolfPack gave up two more in the first half and trailed 3-0 as the fall to 1-10 on the year.  Alyssa Smith (1st year, Langley, BC) played the first half in goal for TRU and then was replaced by Deanna Brady (1st year, Richmond, BC).

QUOTES:

TRU head coach Kelly Shantz, on the match:  “Alberta is an experienced, well organized team which went non stop. Full marks to them. Disappointed in my team in their handling of ‘dangerous balls inside our own 18 yards area and our penalty box. We aren’t aggressive or organized enough.  Two of the first three goals in the first half were probably goals that against organized team shouldn’t happen or be in the net.  Pretty straight forward to think we should have been tied or even up at the first half.  We played much better playing forward than we have all year.  Marisa Mendonca (2nd year, midfield, Penticton, BC) on a great solo effort with a  cross from Katie Harding (4th year, midfield, Salmon Arm, BC)  and Cassie Morris (1st year, defender, Kamloops, BC) hit the post on a clean drive in the first half. We had a couple of other of looks at the net as well.  But the breakdowns in our own penalty area hurt during the course of the day.  Four of their six goals were ones that we have to correct as a team. We are going to have to be more aggressive going into our final two games.”

UP NEXT:

The WolfPack will wrap up their regular season at home next weekend (Oct 22-23) against the University of Regina Cougars and the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Kick off both days will be 1 pm.

OF NOTE:

Ricci Leich (1st year, midfielder, Powell River, BC) was the WolfPack player of the game.  Says Shantz : “Had her best day as a WolfPack member. She is learning the game well and stayed focused."
