The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s basketball team is looking to put some distance between themselves and their arch rivals this weekend.  The WolfPack and the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat enter this weekend’s play in the Canada West with identical 1-5 records.

The two teams will fight it out on the Warner Rentals Court at the Tournament Capital Centre on Friday and Saturday (Nov 25-26). It’ll be the WolfPack’s final two home games before Christmas.

Not only are wins at stake, but so too is taking the lead in the President’s Cup.  That is a yearly battle between the two schools in all Canada West sports. After the soccer season, it’s tied at two apiece.

The WolfPack are coming off a pair of losses to unbeaten Alberta last weekend.  Head coach Scott Reeves said they learned a lot about themselves.  “We showed some fight and character on Saturday after losing Friday night,” he said. “Back to back weekends on the road aren’t easy and we were still able to work hard and there is some value in that for a young team.”

Reeves feels his team will be successful this weekend if they play team defense. “They can attack you a number of ways and it won’t be all on one person to get defensive stops. Their core is still together from last year. They’ll compete hard on defense and pressure us into turning the ball over.”

He adds his team will have to shoot the ball well and rebound to be successful.

When asked what the biggest surprise of the first half of the season has been thus far, the coach is quick to say that the improvement of second year forward Chelsey Hoey (Parksville, BC).  “Her contirbutions have been great for our team,” he says.

Tip off Friday is 6 pm with Saturday’s game starting at 6 pm.

Friday’s game is the annual CIBC Shoot for the Cure event where proceeds from the gate will go to Breast Cancer Research.

Next weekend, TRU will head to UNBC in Prince George, BC for their final two games before Christmas.
