Witnesses sought in Merritt shooting, police chase

B.C.'s police watchdog is seeking witnesses to a police chase and shooting on Sunday.

RCMP tried to stop a white Ford F-350 multiple times from Quilchena to the northern end of Merritt on the afternoon of June 6. Gerald Cooper, 46, was arrested and charged with flight from police and five counts of attempted murder after the chase, where police and Cooper exchanged gun shots throughout the incident.

That day, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. announced an investigation into the event was underway. They are now seeking witnesses to aid their investigation into whether there was any police wrongdoing during the Sunday chase and officer-involved shooting.

The truck was first stopped in Quilchena, near Saddleman Road and Highway 5A, around 3:50 p.m., but fled police.

From 5:10 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., the truck was seen travelling along Highway 5A near Quilchena, then Highway 5 toward Nicola Avenue.

After turning north on Highway 8, the truck was eventually stopped at the intersection of Highway 8 and 97C.

The independent investigators are asking any person with relevant information or dashcam footage of the incident to contact them at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
