Winter storm warning for Coquihalla Highway

A dump of snow is expected on the Coquihalla this evening, overnight and into tomorrow.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for Highway 5 between Merritt and Hope.

A frontal system crossing the B.C. Interior tonight, Nov. 22, will drop 20 to 30 centimetres of snow south of the summit.

Forecasters say the snow level will be around 1,100 metres this evening and fall to 800 m overnight. The heavy snow is expected to taper off late tomorrow as the weather system moves east.

The rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult, and drivers should be ready for “quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions,” the warning states.

As well, visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in the heavy snowfall.
