A group of firefighters were treated to a free meal from Wings Vernon as a way to thank them for their wildfire fighting efforts.

Customers cheered and clapped for the four firefighters as a way to show their appreciation during the wildfire season at the restaurant yesterday, July 20, said Sherman Dahl, President and CEO of Pretium Group, an Okanagan-based marketing agency, in a press release.

"Their strength of character is evident in all they do, including being wonderful guests of ours at Wings. All the staff and customers could sense their lovely and compassionate way," said Katie Dahl of Wings Vernon, in the news release.

The restaurant treated the firefighters to a free dinner and they left the waitress with a good tip, Sherman said.

There are currently 108 active wildfires in the Kamloops Fire Centre, which stretches from the South Okanagan to Wells Gray Provincial Park, west to Stein Valley Provincial Park.

A state of emergency was declared yesterday in the province due to growing wildfires.
