It’s not all crystal balls, tarot cards and tea leaves. For this full-time, modern-day psychic, it’s all about spiritual business advice and life coaching.

It may come as a surprise to many, but being a psychic in Kelowna can be a lucrative and busy profession.

For Bonita Kay Hodgson, a Psychic Life and Business Coach in Kelowna, being psychic isn't just about fortune-telling and speaking with the dead.

“I don't tell the future. The future is not carved in stone. It's based on the decisions that we make. But a lot of our decisions are informed by our subconscious patterns,” Hodgson told iNFOnews.ca. “So, what I do as a coach is tap directly into the subconscious. And I can say these are the patterns you've been running since you were a toddler that are affecting how you work, your relationships, your career, your spiritual development.”

This may seem more akin to traditional therapy, but Hodgson assures her psychic and empathic abilities help her get to the root of her client’s problems much quicker.

“You might go to them (regular psychologist or psychiatrist) and spend weeks, months, maybe even years talking until you get to the core of the matter. But with my empathic skills, I'm able to just go right there," she said. "I'm an empath. So, when I tap into the subconscious, I will get verbal messages. I'll get visions, physical and emotional cues. And so from the very first session, I'm able to say, these are the patterns you're running and this is how they're affecting you.”

Though this may seem beyond the realm of reason for some, Hodgson has made a full-time job out of advising the local community, especially businesses and entrepreneurs.

“I see entrepreneurship as a spiritual path,” she said. “When you're an entrepreneur, whatever you're selling, a product, service, you're really selling yourself and any subconscious patterns you have around abundance, around worth. So, if you're trying to put your business out there, but something's holding you back, then not all of your energy is going to show up.”

Local business owners and entrepreneurs make up the majority of Hodgson’s clientele.

“Interestingly enough, I'd say a good 60% of my clientele are men. I have been involved in hiring decisions, corporate mergers, because I just need to tune in on a first name and I can describe somebody's work style and personality and whether they're a good fit for the job.”

Hodgson says she has been experiencing visions and messages since she was a child.

“I was born into a psychic family,” she said. “I was born in England. My mother was psychic. So, from toddlerhood, I was hearing voices and having visions and growing up in a family where that was normal. I remember running downstairs and saying, ‘Mom, I heard the voices again’. And she'd be like, ‘That's nice, dear’. It's just normal for us. I didn't even know I was unusual until I started going to school and talking about my experiences and having other kids tell me I was weird.”

Now, she has found a way to establish a successful business out of her apparent otherworldly skills and says that the stigma surrounding psychics doesn’t bother her.

“It might just be I don't attract (negativity). But I also placed an intent that nobody comes to me who isn't prepared to do the work. So, I don't tend to get the people who would dismiss what I do. It's just not showing up in my periphery, I guess I'd say.”

She can also lean on Kelowna's tight-knit psychic community for support.

“It's a wonderful community,” she said. “It's not a competitive community, at least it's never been my experience.”

And it’s a community that’s sure to keep growing, especially as anyone can tap into their innate psychic abilities, according to Hodgson.

“To me, it's basically a muscle that needs exercise and just as some people are naturally more athletic than others, some people are naturally more psychic (and for) some people it's nurtured,” she said. “But just like anybody, if they work hard enough, can become an athlete…  Anyone who wants to apply themselves can become psychic and or can develop the psychic ability further.”

In many ways, Hodgson has beaten the odds by establishing a successful psychic business.

“I've sat with other psychics who've said: ‘Well, as you know, none of us can make a living at this’ and I said I do. But I don't have that belief that that's not possible you know. I've worn a lot of hats in my life but once I realized I was supposed to do this full-time I just basically said to the universe allow me to be of service but support me in that service.”
