What to do in Kamloops and the Okanagan when there's nothing to do

As winter settles in, it seems harder to find things to do in Kamloops and the Okanagan, but don't be fooled. There are still many budget-friendly activities even for those who would rather not step out in the cold.

KELOWNA

Those who are looking for a crafty activity should head over to Work of Art Pottery Studio where drop-in hours are available six days a week. There, one can enjoy painting on a piece of pottery of their choice for as low as $15, prices depend on the piece of pottery chosen. For a little more excitement, check out Scandia Golf & Games. From an indoor mini golf course, their arcade, and their summer go-karts to their batting cages, there's something for everyone and prices start at $10. The Kelowna Art Gallery currently has eight exhibitions on display for the art fanatics out there. Contemporary, indigenous and immersive art exhibitions are all on display at the moment and some of them are free to see while others require a minimum $6 admission fee. For those looking to blow off some steam, Axe Monkeys is the place to go. They have axe-throwing lanes as well as rage rooms which are made to be destroyed. Prices start at $25 and reservations are required. Visit the Axe Monkeys website to book a time slot. 

Those wanting to do a more athletic activity should consider the Gneiss Climbing Gym. The climbing facility focuses on bouldering and offers a challenging experience for beginners as well as experienced climbers. Prices start at $12 and equipment rental is available on site. 

For another artistic activity, the Kelowna Candle Factory offers three different candle-making workshops. On top of selling custom-made candles, they have workshops for those who want to make their own and the prices start at $25. 

Those who might be looking for a more easy-going activity can get a dinner and movie combo at Bernie's which combines a restaurant, a bar and a cinema all in one location. Bernie's shows current movies as well as older movies that have not been in movie theatres for quite some time now. KAMLOOPS

Kamloops Art Party drop-in sessions are a great place for those who want to make some art. Drop-ins are available as of $8 for those who want to make art through different mediums: resin, ceramic, acrylic, glassware, paint pouring, sculpture, pottery, clay, and watercolour. Those who want to try it out but have no experience yet can even sign up for classes at the same location. 

For a more family-friendly exciting experience, head over to The Fun Factor Fun Centre. There's an arcade, some laser tag, mini bowling, bumper cars and a 'QBIX' experience. For information on the prices and the opening hours, visit their website here

Those who are looking to do some thrifting or attend some live music should go to The London Creative.  This location is a thrift store, a self-deemed apothecary lounge, a coffee shop as well as a venue for musicians who go there to perform live.

Kamloops Art Gallery, the biggest art gallery in BC's Interior, offers a variety of exhibitions from contemporary art to indigenous art. While currently closed for installation, it will reopen as of Jan. 13 where students and children get in for free and adults for $5.

Just outside of Kamloops, in downtown Barnhartvale, is The Pond Country Market. The market combines a restaurant, a gift shop and a nursery making it the ideal place to enjoy some delicious food and some locally sourced gifts.

PENTICTON

For book lovers, head over to The Bookshop, one of Canada's biggest used bookstores. With more than 5,000 square feet, bookworms are guaranteed hours of perusing in this Penticton gem. 

The Penticton Art Gallery is currently holding two art exhibitions including one where visitors can buy artwork which is all priced under $500. The price of admission is by donation, go to the Penticton Art Gallery website for more information. 

VERNON

The Vernon Community Arts Centre offers art classes and workshops as well as studio drop-ins for the more experienced artists. They have seven different studios to choose from and more than 40 classes for artists of all levels and all mediums. For prices and availabilities, check out their website here

Vernon's Rock Garden Climbing Centre offers an athletic activity. They have something for every level of climber offering a bouldering section, a top rope section as well as a bouldering cave. Prices start at $6. 

The Camelot Haven Alpacas is a store that sells items made of alpaca wool. The store is based on the farm, where visitors can visit the alpacas. The farm is only open on the weekends and does not allow dogs.
