A Kelowna-area nurse has been suspended for snooping on medical records.

According to a Jan. 3 B.C. college and Midwives decision, Westbank-based registered nurse Shelley Horner admitted she looked at confidential medical records she wasn't supposed to.

Horner also admitted to the nursing regulator that she asked a physician to write a prescription for a controlled substance for another person who wasn't a patient of the doctor.

The registered nurse signed a consent agreement with the regulator accepting a three-day suspension.

In 2022, seven nurses were sanctioned for accessing private medical records. Punishments ranged from suspensions of a few days to six months.

In December B.C. privacy commissioner said that people's medical records were "disturbingly" vulnerable.

The decision says Horner will also have to take courses in boundaries, privacy, and addiction care and treatment.

The College says it's satisfied that the terms will protect the public.

No other information was provided from the nursing College.
