West Kelowna wine trail to get some brews

West Kelowna’s most wine saturated neighbourhood is getting some new flavour and a lot of support.

Lakesider Brewing, on West Kelowna’s wine trail, went to council Monday to get a parking variance that clears the way for it to open up in a neighbourhood strip mall.

City rules indicate it's required to have 40 parking stalls, while only seven are designated for the brewery in the mall’s parking lot.

Council agreed unanimously to grant the 33-stall variance in large part because the brewery’s busiest hours of operation will be in the evening, long after other tenants have left the space.

“It seems logical to me to have shared parking spots,” West Kelowna mayor Gord Milsom said.

Council members also pointed out they supported the addition to the community for being something other than beer.

In a pitch to neighbours posted on their website, the owners of Lakesider said they want to offer a family-friendly gathering place that has more than 900 square-feet of patio featuring stunning views of vineyards, Okanagan Lake, and sunsets over Mt Boucherie.

“The Lakeview Mall revitalization has been a tremendous success for our community, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it,” a request for support on their website read in the days before the hearing.

Support came from many area residents as well as neighbourhood businesses.
