West Kelowna sports fields closed due to heavy rains

The District of West Kelowna has been able to reopen the Boucherie Main Ball Field on East Boundary Road due to a break in the rain Thursday afternoon.

All other ball and sports fields in the District of West Kelowna remain closed, until further notice due to heavy rain, which has fallen in the Central Okanagan since the May long weekend.

Closures are required when turf becomes heavily saturated causing water to pool on sports fields. Standing water can lead to player injuries and cause considerable damage to turf if the fields remain in play.

Up to 60 mm of rain has already fallen in the Central Okanagan during the week of May 19. Some rain remains in the weekend forecast, although precipitation is not expected to be as heavy as in past days. The Parks Department will continue to monitor weather, and its effect on playing conditions, and will reopen municipal sports fields as soon as possible.

The District of West Kelowna thanks all of its field users for their understanding.
