WEST KELOWNA - A pro-life billboard in West Kelowna, that has been up for over a year, has attracted some more recent controversy.
According to Marlon Bartram, executive director with the Kelowna Right to Life Society, an anonymous complaint about the billboard was registered with Advertising Standards Canada on March 7. Ad Standards is a self-regulating body which monitors the integrity of Canadian advertising, according to the organization's website.
The pro-life billboard, positioned near the intersection of Highway 97 South and Grizzly Road in West Kelowna, depicts a pregnant woman and a woman carrying the baby with the line, "Our right to life does not depend on our location."
A press release from the Society states the complaint argues the billboard is inaccurate and misleading, suggesting that people are allowed to abort full-term babies in Canada.
The Society submitted its response to the complaint and they're expecting a decision from Ad Standards in mid-April. If Ad Standards sides with the complainant, they could ask for the billboard to be removed.
Bartram said the billboard has been up for over a year and the Society has just renewed it for another six months. He said the public response to it has been mostly polite.
"We were surprised it took so long for someone to complain," he said.
