West Kelowna has issued a public alert for a bear in the area.
The City issued a bear-in-area notice this afternoon, May 1, for a black bear that was seen with an unknown number of cubs on and around Mt. Boucherie and Rose Valley trails, according to a City media release.
The City recommends that residents:
-
Make noise
-
Travel in groups
-
Keep dogs leashed
-
Carry bear spray and know how to use it
If you encounter a bear:
-
Back away slowly, while talking in a calm voice
-
If charged, stand your ground and deploy bear spray
-
Report encounters to the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277
With more people staying home, and changes in food purchasing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the B.C. Conservation Service and regional districts are reminding residents to be bear aware as bears wake up and begin seeking food.
