A controversial West Kelowna gym that continues to defy COVID-19 public health mandates has been ordered to close.

Interior Health ordered Iron Energy Fitness Centre Ltd., as well as its directors, officers and managers to close Feb. 3 due to a “risk of a health hazard” by defying public health orders.

The gym kept its doors open in December, 2021 after an order came into effect across the province by provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry to curb the spread of the infectious COVID-19 variant Omicron for gyms to close.

Iron Energy Gym kept its doors open for its members after the order was delivered, claiming that it offers a space that not only allows their customers to work on their physical health, but also their mental health.

Although gyms have since been allowed to re-opened, the gym has continue to defy public health orders, allowing users to forgo masks and stated it will not enforce COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

"They came and ordered us to close our doors because we refuse to ask our patrons for private medical information," according to an Instagram post from Iron Energy. "They are bullying us into submission."

Gym owners and Interior Health could not immediately be reached for comment.
