WEST KELOWNA - After less than a decade of welcoming people to the city, the greeting signs to West Kelowna need a little work.

A report is heading to West Kelowna city council Tuesday evening requesting $18,700 to replace or repair the current signs.

“Real cedar wood would be attractive and pay tribute to our community's logging and timber mill industries,” the report to council said.

The signs went up just seven years ago. Since then, the condition of the signs has deteriorated greatly, according to the report.

Weather has caused the printed plastic wrap to deteriorate, and the aluminum panels are cracked and tearing away.

“The solar lighting system has endured many acts of vandalism including the solar panels shot at, batteries stolen and one complete pole and panel assembly cut down and stolen,” the report says.

The city is considering a few options when it comes to replacing the signs themselves as well as the lighting features.

West Kelowna city staff are recommending council approve the new cedar signs to replace the existing ones for $13,500 - the most expensive option. Two cheaper options include simply updating the existing signs which would mean they would have to be fixed or replaced in another seven to eight years.

For lights, the three options include constructing a permanent service to each site, rebuilding the solar systems and installing vandal proof housing, or to simply not light the signs, ranging in costs from $50,900 to $5,200 to nothing.

The cost of the original signs was $30,000 for the construction, as well as $15,000 for the two solar lighting packages.
