OKANAGAN - If sitting back and enjoying a cold drink on the patio is your idea of a good way to end the work week, get ready to do so in record high temperatures.

Environment Canada is calling for a high of 24 Celsius today, April 8, in Vernon and Kelowna and 25 C in Penticton. Record temperatures for this day include highs of 23 C in Penticton, set in 2014, 23.9 C in Vernon and 24.2 C in Kelowna, both set in 1977.

The rest of the weekend is expected to be slightly cooler, but still quite warm, with highs of 18 C to 20 C forecast for Saturday and Sunday. The seasonal normal high for the valley sits at 14 C.

Overnight lows are also expected to be just above seasonal normals of 3 C, with Saturday night forecast to be the coolest with a low of 3 C.

Sunny skies are expected throughout the weekend with just a bit of cloud today. Winds are also expected to gust up to 50 kilometres per hour beginning this afternoon in Vernon and Kelowna and up to 40 km/h in Penticton.

If you need one last ski run in before you’re willing to officially declare winter over, you may be in luck. The ski season ends at Big White on Sunday, April 10, and Mother Nature is offering up highs of 13 C today, 8 C Saturday and 10 C Sunday along with a mix of sun and cloud this weekend.

The warmer temperatures also mean avalanche risk remains high in some areas and Avalanche Canada is recommending people heading into the backcountry plan to start and finish their days early while the weather is warm and sunny.

“It sure feels like summer; maybe it's time to consider pulling out your bike or rock shoes?” one avalanche forecast report reads.
